I recently saw a tweet and promptly corrected and unfollowed someone who designated Vanessa Hudgens “queen of Coachella”. Rather dramatic intro, I know, but let me explain.
For those who haven’t succumb to the ironic mainstream trend of attending indie-underground music festivals, Coachella…
lol are you serious…? Since when is people wearing what they wanna wear a fucking crime? I’m so sick of people constantly hating on others who “wannabe dress indie” she is not disrespecting any culture. If she wants to wear bindis & saris then so be it, they’re beautiful & should be appreciated. God damn just let people be themselves.
Yes, I am serious. And it’s really ridiculous and sad that you’re this tagged by something you don’t understand and have the nerve to tell me what I should be feeling or doing in regards to something very important to me and my people as a misunderstood minority. Never did I consider it a “fucking crime”. But it is disrespectful, whether she knows it or not, and whether you know it or not.
You are demonstrating that you do not know what it’s like to be discriminated against or harassed for celebrating your culture and being called a foreigner based on your appearance, but when a person who is not a part of that culture (an ignorant celeb or white person, for example) wears OUR clothes WE get bullshit for, it’s a fucking fashion statement. She’s just expressing herself, I should calm down, blah blah blah. What the fuck?
That’s called cultural appropriation. Stripping away meaning and disregarding what it means to the people by turning it into a goddamn fashion accessory that I should be okay with.
Do not come at me with the “let people be themselves” argument ever again. Because I will never tolerate ignorance, the undermining of something as important as our traditions/culture, or bullshit. EVER.
I cannot believe I even had to read that.
